FAQ: Backflow & Backflow Prevention
Frequently asked questions and answers from the KAS Corp. backflow prevention specialists:
- What is backflow?
Backflow can occur throughout the day in our plumbing system. As we attach systems to our drinking water, backflow devices are a proven barrier that protects us from harmful contaminants.
- Do I Need a reduced pressure zone (R.P.Z.) valve on my sprinkler system?
An R.P.Z. is the highest separation safety. It is used where there is high hazard contaminants. Typical sprinkler systems have both bacterial and chemical contaminants, so an R.P.Z. is highly recommended.
Do I need to test each year?
The test not only ensures that the device is working it also give the tester the chance to perform routine maintenance, as needed, all with the common goal of stopping backflow. Additionally, most municipalities now require annual backflow testing in accordance with Illinois law and the EPA's Federal Safe Drinking Water Act.
